Walking looks simple. It’s not. Every step is a controlled fall — momentum carries you forward, one leg catches you, the other swings through, your trunk rotates, your arms counter-swing, your eyes scan ahead, your inner ear stabilises. Hundreds of micro-decisions per minute, all happening below conscious awareness.
When that integration starts to degrade — even slightly — the whole system compensates. Stride shortens to give you more time. Speed drops because the system is less confident. Posture shifts to keep you over your centre of gravity. None of it feels like a problem until one day, it does.
First, balance. As the vestibular and proprioceptive systems become less precise, you walk more carefully — less heel-strike, shorter stride, less push-off through the toes.
Second, joint stiffness. Hips, ankles, and the thoracic spine lose range. You walk with less hip extension, less ankle dorsiflexion, less trunk rotation. The whole gait becomes more ‘mechanical.’
Third, muscle weakness — particularly in the glutes, calves, and core. Without sufficient push-off and stability, you take smaller, more cautious steps.
Walking speed is one of the most reliable predictors of healthy ageing. It’s also one of the most trainable.
